What’s your score?
Microsoft Office 365 is used by millions of organizations worldwide, and there are many configurations and behaviors built into the product that can reduce a business’s risk to their data. But the Microsoft team had an idea – what if there was one simple metric that could show IT professionals how much they’ve already done to reduce their security risk, and could help them understand how to further reduce that risk? It all ties into an overall “score,” like a credit score, that can improve over time and can be compared to benchmarks within an industry.
Partnering with a product team
Secure Score was an entirely new product, so we started with a collaborative Clarity Lab workshop to define the desired experience and feature set. In partnership with the product team, we produced a wide range of solutions from which we narrowed down to the right mix of interaction and data visualization. We brought IT security professionals into the process through usability testing with low-and-high-fidelity prototypes, which helped us refine and simplify the “score” concept.
Throughout the design phase we aligned closely with the existing Office 365 design pattern library and the overall Microsoft brand, and we delivered HTML/CSS components that the Microsoft development team could easily integrate with their back end.
The Secure Score service “preview” launched in August 2016 to rave reviews. We are continuing to design new features and enhancements with the team at Microsoft.
